How to get started with Sustainability (reporting)?

Starting with sustainability reporting can be a daunting task.

Where do you start? What needs to be included?

We have helped clients with this question, and usually it is a matter of just starting.

Make sure you look at the following 4 elements:

  1. Does my company have a strategy in place? Is it supported by the shareholders, by senior management? Is my strategy used to differentiate me from my competition?
  2. The second step has to be an impact, risk and opportunity assessment. The ESRS describes what needs to be included, and has some requirements on the process, but at the end you know your business, and it can be a fun exercise. Set a day aside with some key people in your organization, maybe even some customers or industry experts, and brainstorm on every aspect of climate change and how it can impact your business.
  3. The 3rd point we would include is Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reporting (often combined with reporting on the energy use). Especially scope 1 and scope 2 are pretty straightforward, and they should not be too much of a problem (Unfortunately it is a different story when it comes to scope 3 GHG emissions reporting).
  4. The 4th point to include would be your adaptation and mitigation plans. Basically have a strategy to tackle the consequences of climate change, and what you will do to prevent climate change.

As you can see from the quick summary above, it is a very doable task; and it will force you to strategically think about the future and this might give you an edge on the competition.

If you have still questions, please do not hesitate to call us and we will give you some help to get started with these 4 points!
